Mariko Farrell is a San Francisco-based songwriter, composer, and storyteller. Known for performing both as a solo artist and with eclectic bands, her sound is shaped by a lifelong immersion in global music and culture.
Her artistic journey began in childhood, singing in a trio with her sisters. She went on to study classical music at UC Berkeley before expanding her sonic palette to include jazz and the traditional sounds of Indian, Indonesian, Middle Eastern, and Latin music.
Driven by a curiosity for global music and culture, Mariko spent years traveling and studying throughout Asia. Following extensive stays in Bali to study gamelan, she later returned to tour with the ensemble Gamelan Sekar Jaya. Mariko also lived and worked in Japan as a professional musician—performing as a soloist in a geisha nightclub—and has sung with the Arabic music ensemble, Aswat.
Mariko wrote, composed, and performed Hostage, a solo musical based on her experience of being taken hostage in South Korea.
For Living Books (Random House/Brøderbund), she authored, directed, and composed the music for Maggie's Farmyard Adventure, and co-directed and wrote the songs for Sheila Rae the Brave. Her music has appeared in Disney theme parks, Nickelodeon shows, and Fisher-Price toys, and she has worked as a sound designer and videographer.
Her music is available on all major streaming platforms.
